Perplexity shows its working, and that’s exactly your way in.
We test your visibility across the platforms your customers already ask
Unlike a lot of AI tools, Perplexity puts its sources front and centre, numbered citations and all, which means you can actually see, and influence, what it’s reading.

Perplexity is built differently, on purpose
Most AI tools give you an answer and expect you to trust it. Perplexity shows its working, every answer comes with numbered citations linking straight to the pages it used, and you can click through and check for yourself. That’s not a small design choice, it changes the whole incentive structure. Because Perplexity is doing live retrieval on essentially every query, searching the web fresh rather than mostly relying on what it learned during training, it behaves less like an oracle recalling facts and more like a very fast researcher who reads a stack of sources and hands you a summary with footnotes. For a business, that’s actually good news. It means the game isn’t about somehow getting baked into a model’s training data, which you have very little control over, it’s about having content, right now, today, that’s clear enough and specific enough to be worth citing when someone asks a relevant question. That’s a far more achievable target for a small business than trying to influence what a model was trained on eighteen months ago.
What gets cited, and what gets ignored
Perplexity tends to favour pages that are recent, specific, and get to the point fast. A page dated this year with a clear factual claim in the first couple of sentences beats a page from three years ago that opens with a paragraph of scene-setting before saying anything useful. Vague brand language gets skipped over almost entirely, ‘industry-leading service’ gives the model nothing to quote, while ‘we’ve fitted over 400 bathrooms across Greater Manchester since 2015’ gives it something concrete to lift and attribute to you. Because retrieval happens live, freshness carries real weight here in a way it doesn’t for models leaning mainly on older training data. A pricing page updated last week has a genuine edge over one that hasn’t changed since before the pandemic, even if the old one still technically ranks fine in Google. If you want Perplexity to cite you, write the way you’d explain something to a mate down the pub, plainly, with a number in it, not the way you’d write a mission statement.
Why forums and comparison content punch above their weight
Open up a few Perplexity answers about local services and you’ll notice something, Reddit threads, review roundups and comparison articles show up as citations constantly, often more than official business websites. That’s because those sources tend to contain exactly the kind of direct, comparative claims Perplexity is built to surface, ‘X is cheaper than Y but Z has a faster turnaround’, ‘I used three different removal firms in Manchester and this is what I’d tell you’. A polished corporate website rarely talks like that about itself, and can’t talk that way about competitors at all. This is an opening for smaller businesses without big marketing budgets. Being genuinely, honestly discussed in a forum thread, a local Facebook group, or a proper comparison piece can get you cited by Perplexity even if your own website is fairly basic. It’s worth actually taking part in those conversations where you can, rather than assuming all the useful work has to happen on your own domain.
How to give Perplexity something worth citing
Publish pages that answer one real question clearly, with the answer near the top and a specific detail in it, a price, a timeframe, a number. Date your content and actually keep it updated, a page that’s visibly current has an edge over one that’s gone stale. Don’t bury the useful sentence under three paragraphs of introduction, Perplexity’s retrieval rewards directness, not scene-setting. Beyond your own site, look for the comparison articles, forum threads and review roundups already being cited in your industry and find genuine ways to be part of that conversation, whether that’s a considered forum answer or simply making sure your business is easy to find and quote when someone’s writing that kind of piece. None of this requires a huge content operation. It requires a handful of genuinely useful, specific, up-to-date pages, and a bit of presence in the places your industry’s comparisons already happen.
