Why your Google Business Profile matters more than you think for AI
When an AI assistant needs to check if a business is real, open and any good, your Google Business Profile is usually the first place it looks.

Why AI trusts your Google Business Profile more than your website
Your website is something you control entirely, which is exactly why an AI system treats it with a bit of caution. Your Google Business Profile is different: it’s a structured record that Google has verified in various ways over time, with details, photos and reviews accumulating from multiple sources, not just you. That makes it a far more reliable-looking reference point for a machine trying to check whether a business is real, current and trustworthy. Picture someone asking an AI assistant “is there a decent plumber in Stockport open on a Saturday”. The answer it gives is likely to draw heavily on Business Profile data and review content, not a scan of every local plumber’s homepage. If your profile is thin, outdated, or contradicts your website, you’re handing that answer to a competitor whose profile is properly filled in instead.
Categories and hours: the two things people get wrong constantly
Your primary category should describe exactly what you do, not the closest vague option in the list. An electrician in Manchester who picks “Contractor” as their primary category instead of “Electrician” is making themselves harder to match against the specific searches that actually convert. Pile on too many secondary categories and you dilute that precision further rather than casting a wider net. Hours matter just as much, and they’re the thing businesses forget to update most: bank holidays, seasonal changes, a one-off closure for a family do. A profile confidently showing “open” when you’re shut doesn’t just annoy a customer standing outside your door, it actively erodes the trust signal an AI tool would otherwise lean on when deciding whether to recommend you at all.
Description consistency: make it match your website, near enough word for word
If your website says “family-run since 1998”, your Google Business Profile description doesn’t mention it at all, and your Facebook page says “established 2010”, you’ve created three slightly different stories about the same business. A human visitor might not notice or care. A system trying to verify facts across multiple sources absolutely will, and contradictions like that make it hedge its answer or leave you out of a recommendation altogether in favour of a business whose story adds up everywhere it’s checked. This isn’t about copying and pasting identical text everywhere, which can look spammy. It’s about making sure the core facts, your history, your services, what makes you different, tell the same consistent story wherever someone finds you.
Photos and Q&A: the bits everyone ignores
Recent, genuine photos of your premises, your team and your work carry real weight, far more than stock imagery or photos from years ago that no longer reflect what you actually look like today. They’re one of the clearest signals that a business is active and real rather than a shell. The Q&A section is worth checking regularly too, because anyone can post a question there, including wrong or outdated answers from strangers if you leave it unattended. Get in the habit of answering questions yourself, proactively, with the same real answers you’d give a customer on the phone. It’s also a source of exactly the kind of direct, structured content an AI tool can lift straight into an answer.
